Rooted in Passage
2025
Textile assemblage, acrylic, and thread on drop cloth
52 X 69 in.
Rooted in Passage explores the ways belonging is shaped through movement, memory, and the places we come to call home. Inspired by the quiet resilience of the American sycamore tree, the work reflects on the experience of putting down roots while carrying the histories, traditions, and landscapes that travel with us.
Built upon a reclaimed drop cloth, the composition gathers painted surfaces, patterned textiles, and hand stitching into a layered field of color and texture. Each fragment retains its own identity while becoming part of a larger whole, suggesting that belonging is not found in sameness but in the coexistence of many stories, cultures, and lived experiences.
Thread moves deliberately across the surface, binding these materials together through a slow and repetitive gesture. Stitching becomes an act of connection, linking memory, place, and inherited knowledge while revealing identity as something continuously woven, repaired, and reimagined over time.
