The Skin of Time
2018
Textile, gouache, and acrylic
on drop cloth
84 X 35 in.
The Skin of Time begins with a gifted kimono, an object already shaped by another life, another body, and another story. Rather than preserving it unchanged, the work embraces transformation, allowing memory to continue unfolding through the act of making. Hundreds of hand-painted white dots gather across its surface, forming a quiet constellation that reflects on time, loss, and renewal.
The kimono carries more than its cultural history. It becomes a vessel for lived experience, holding traces of movement, generosity, and human connection. Like memory itself, it travels across places and generations, collecting new meanings while preserving those that came before.
Resting upon a reclaimed drop cloth, the work brings together materials associated with both care and labor. The familiar becomes precious, and the overlooked becomes visible. Through paint, cloth, and repetition, ordinary materials are transformed into a space where remembrance and renewal exist side by side.
